WOMEN'S HEALTH

Women have different health issues than men.  While the causes of a sore throat or a sprained ankle may not vary much between a man and a woman, the causes of reproductive health issues will be vastly different.  Women need specially trained healthcare providers who understand their unique differences.

Women respond well to the naturopathic approach, which addresses not only isolated physical symptoms but the whole person – mind, spirit and lifestyle as well as body.  Women in particular appreciate the fact that naturopathic doctors are willing to spend more time listening to their patients and discussing alternatives.

Dr. Caitlin consults with women on a wide range of health issues, including abnormal pap tests, irregular or painful menstrual periods, polycystic ovarian syndrome, fibroids, metabolic disorders, fertility challenges, birth control and family planning, peri/post-menopause, nutrition and stress management.  Her midwifery experience adds to her understanding of women’s health concerns throughout the reproductive years and beyond.

“I respect the many choices women make about both health and lifestyle.  I realize that the choices we make about our bodies and about our health are deeply personal.  It is my goal to work with women to find the best options available to fit their unique needs.”

Postpartum

The three months following the birth of a baby are often referred to as the “fourth trimester.” However, Dr. Caitlin truly believes the post-partum adjustment period is typically closer to 2 years.  As your hormones and emotions shift, your body changes and your sleep is disrupted, this time can be extremely challenging. Mothers need specially trained healthcare providers who can help them successfully navigate and adjust to their new world.

In addition, many new mothers plan to breastfeed their babies – but there can be unexpected challenges in this area as well.  Just because breastfeeding is natural does not mean that it is always easy.  From producing enough milk to perfecting the “latch,” there is a lot of work to be done. During the first two weeks post-partum, we recommend working with experienced lactation consultants who can do home visit to evaluate and assist new moms with breastfeeding.  If additional support is needed, Dr. Caitlin can help work with more complex lactation concerns.

Post partum depression and anxiety are extremely common and under-recognized.  Naturopathic medicine can help.  Dr. Caitlin has a special interest in helping new families adapt and thrive, especially woman who are experiencing perinatal or postpartum mood disorders.

In addition to being a licensed Naturopathic Doctor, Dr. O’Connor extended her medical education to become a Naturopathic Midwife.   Her specialized courses in this area included lactation management, the safe use of herbs during lactation and post-partum mood support. She has participated in the birth and post-partum care of more than 100 babies – including support with breastfeeding and parenting.

“Adjusting to parenthood is stressful, It helps to have a team of support people. A Naturopathic Doctor with experience in post-partum care is an important part of this team. Gentle, non-toxic modalities help new moms find balance.”
